Gangut Victory Day commemorates the Russian fleet's victory over Swedish forces in 1714 during the Great Northern War. The battle was a major milestone for Peter the Great's developing navy and remains an important part of Russian naval remembrance.
How it is celebrated: naval museums explain the engagement through talks, exhibitions and guided tours. Commemorative events recall the sailors and commanders who took part in the fighting.
Calm weather helped the Russian rowing vessels. With little wind, Swedish sailing warships lost mobility, while galleys could still move under oars and exploit the advantage.
