Gynaikratia, the Women's Festival in Greece

Gynaikratia is an old Greek folk custom in which women take charge for a day while men stay home and run the household.

How it is celebrated: women gather in cafés that are normally the men's territory, eating, drinking and having fun, while the men look after the children, cook and clean. In some villages the day is full of jokes, songs and long shared meals.

The name literally means "rule of women" in Greek. The day is also known as the Day of the Midwife, because in village tradition it honours the women who helped deliver babies.
