International Day against Illicit Trafficking in Cultural Property

This day is a reminder that stolen and smuggled antiquities rob people of part of their history. UNESCO uses it to call for protecting cultural heritage and stopping illegal trade in it.

How it is celebrated: museums, customs services and researchers hold exhibitions, talks and online campaigns, tell stories of artefacts that were returned home, and explain how to tell a lawful purchase from a doubtful one.

The date is no accident: on 14 November 1970 UNESCO adopted its Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property.
