Croatian Independence Day
June 25 · Level 9 · #436 of 2238
Croatian Independence Day recalls parliament’s 1991 declaration of sovereignty and independence. It marks a decisive step towards leaving Yugoslavia and establishing a separate state following a referendum on independence.
How it is celebrated: official messages, historical features and commemorative events revisit the anniversary. They focus on the parliamentary decision, the road to international recognition and the people whose lives were shaped by those events.
The June declaration and the final severing of state ties were months apart. Following an agreed moratorium, parliament adopted the decision ending those remaining ties in October.
