Crimean Offensive Victory Day

This remembrance date marks the completion of the Soviet Crimean offensive in 1944, which ended Nazi occupation of the peninsula. It honours those who fought and remembers the military and civilian lives lost during the war.

How it is celebrated: commemorations include laying flowers at war memorials, museum exhibitions, remembrance gatherings and history lessons. Letters, photographs and personal accounts help connect the military campaign with the people who experienced it.

The liberation of Sevastopol did not mark the end of the entire offensive. The city was liberated on 9 May; the final fighting at Cape Chersonese ended on 12 May.
