Cannes Film Festival

The Cannes Film Festival brings international cinema to the French Riviera each year. New films make their debut, directors find wider audiences and a jury awards the Palme d'Or. It is a festival lasting several days, with dates that vary from year to year.

How it is celebrated: premieres, filmmaker conversations, press conferences and red-carpet appearances fill the programme. Alongside the screenings, a film market brings industry professionals together to discuss production and distribution.

Cannes was originally supposed to launch in 1939. The outbreak of the Second World War disrupted those plans, and the first full festival finally took place in 1946.
