Russia's Border Guards Day honours those who protect the country's land and maritime frontiers. It is both a professional celebration and a reunion day, bringing serving personnel and veterans together to recognise service and remember fallen colleagues.
How it is celebrated: ceremonial formations, awards and flower-laying take place at units and memorials. Veterans meet former comrades, often wearing the green service caps closely associated with Russian border guards.
The date recalls a 1918 decree establishing the border guard of Soviet Russia. The work of guarding Russia's borders, however, has a history far older than the holiday.
