How it is celebrated: stores open early or launch online offers, while shoppers draw up wish lists in advance and compare prices. Many save a few purchases for Cyber Monday.
In the 1960s, police in Philadelphia used the phrase “Black Friday” for the traffic jams and crowds that filled the city centre after Thanksgiving.
