Bashkir Language Day

Bashkir Language Day is dedicated to the language spoken and sung in Bashkortostan and beyond. It encourages people to cherish their mother tongue and pass it on to children.

How it is celebrated: schools and libraries run native-language lessons, recitation and storytelling contests, dictations and meetings with poets, while people online share favourite Bashkir words and songs.

Bashkir belongs to the Kipchak branch of the Turkic languages. Its alphabet is Cyrillic with nine extra letters: ә, ө, ү, ғ, ҡ, ң, ҙ, ҫ and һ.
