World Theatre Day

World Theatre Day celebrates the meeting of performers and audiences, and the many people who make that encounter possible. Actors, directors, playwrights and backstage teams all share the occasion with anyone who loves a story unfolding live.

How it is celebrated: theatres arrange special performances, backstage visits, discussions and open rehearsals. An annual international message by an invited cultural figure is shared across the theatre community.

French writer and artist Jean Cocteau wrote the first World Theatre Day message in 1962. That tradition gives a remarkably local experience—a performance in one room—a conversation that reaches across borders.
