This day celebrates how social networks changed the way we talk, so that friends, colleagues and whole communities are a tap away. It is a chance to appreciate online connection and to think about using it wisely.
How it is celebrated: people post with the day's hashtags, message long-lost acquaintances, and brands share stories about their online communities. Others do the opposite, skipping the feed for a day and meeting friends face to face.
The day was launched in 2010 by the media company Mashable and soon spread well beyond its original audience.
