World Saltmarsh Day

Saltmarshes are coastal meadows that the tide floods again and again. This day reminds us that these humble wetlands shield shorelines from storms and give birds and young fish a place to live.

How it is celebrated: nature lovers join guided marsh walks, volunteers count birds and clear litter, and schoolchildren learn how plants cope with salty water.

Sheep graze the saltmarshes around Mont-Saint-Michel Bay in France, and their meat, known as pré-salé, is prized for its distinctive flavour from the marsh plants.
