International Day of Play

International Day of Play celebrates the way play helps children learn, build friendships and explore new ideas. Established by the United Nations, it calls for every child to have the time, opportunity and safe spaces to play.

How it is celebrated: families, schools and community groups organize active games, creative activities and shared play sessions. Adults are encouraged to join in while leaving room for children to invent their own rules and stories.

Play is explicitly recognized in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. It is a right in its own terms, rather than a reward children must earn after finishing their homework.
