World Hijab Day

World Hijab Day is a public initiative challenging prejudice against women who wear a Muslim headscarf. It invites people to listen to their experiences and consider how clothing connects with faith, identity and the way someone is treated.

How it is celebrated: participants hold discussions, organise community events and share personal stories online. Women who wish to take part, including non-Muslims, voluntarily try wearing a hijab for a day and reflect on the experience.

The initiative began in New York in 2013. Its founder, Nazma Khan, grew up in Bangladesh and experienced ridicule for wearing her headscarf after moving to the United States.
