World Bicycle Day

World Bicycle Day celebrates a practical way to travel, stay active and reduce the environmental impact of everyday journeys. The United Nations established it in 2018, recognising the bicycle's accessibility and usefulness around the world.

How it is celebrated: communities arrange group rides, cycling lessons and campaigns for safer routes. Some people cycle to work; others discover a familiar neighbourhood from a different saddle-height perspective.

Karl Drais's 1817 predecessor to the bicycle had no pedals. Riders moved forward by pushing their feet against the ground.
