Independence Day

Independence Day marks the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The document announced the separation of thirteen colonies from Britain, and its anniversary became a major American summer celebration.

How it is celebrated: friends and families gather for cookouts and picnics, while communities stage parades and concerts. In the evening, crowds settle into parks and along waterfronts to watch fireworks.

John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, both presidents and key figures in American independence, died on the same day: July 4, 1826, exactly fifty years after the Declaration was adopted.
