Temari Day

Temari Day celebrates the Japanese craft of decorating thread-wrapped balls with intricate stitched patterns. Once children’s playthings, temari have become keepsakes and decorative artworks, combining careful geometry with a remarkably colourful imagination.

How it is celebrated: enthusiasts share finished pieces, exchange patterns and run workshops. Beginners practise dividing a ball into sections and placing their first stitches, while experienced makers explore more elaborate designs.

Traditional temari gave fabric scraps a second life: leftover cloth formed the core beneath the wrapping and decorative threads.
