Strange Music Day
August 24 · Level 4 · #1539 of 2238

An informal day for anyone tired of chart hits who wants to hear something truly unexpected. It invites you to listen to, play and invent music that sounds nothing like the usual.
How it is celebrated: fans build playlists of their oddest recordings, tune in to field recordings and city noise, swap strange tracks and try homemade instruments.
In 1948 the French composer Pierre Schaeffer began making music from recorded everyday sounds, including railway noise. That was the start of musique concrète, and many of today's sound experiments grow from it.
