National Waffle Day
August 24 · Level 1 · #2111 of 2238

An unofficial American holiday for crisp waffles with little pockets made to hold syrup. It falls on 24 August, the anniversary of a waffle iron patent.
How it is celebrated: families make waffles for breakfast with maple syrup, berries or whipped cream, and cafés and restaurants offer special dishes and deals. The boldest cooks serve them with fried chicken.
Cornelius Swarthout patented his waffle iron on 24 August 1869. Americans got a taste of Belgian-style waffles at the 1964 New York World's Fair.
