Pärtel's Day
August 24 · Level 1 · #2153 of 2238

Pärtel's Day, or Pärtlipäev, is the Estonian name for St Bartholomew's Day. In the folk calendar it sits on the border between summer and autumn.
How it is celebrated: people recall old weather and harvest sayings, notice how the evenings are getting darker, and share a table with home-cooked food.
The Western church remembers the apostle Bartholomew on 24 August, and the Estonian name Pärtel comes from his name. That is how a church feast became part of the village year.
