International Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff Members
March 25 · Level 9 · #299 of 2238

This is a day to remember and stand by United Nations colleagues who have been detained or have gone missing while doing their jobs. It speaks for people who work in dangerous places for the sake of others, and for the families who wait for news.
How it is celebrated: UN offices hold moments of silence, senior officials issue messages, and staff associations call for the release of detained colleagues and for answers about those who have disappeared.
The date goes back to Alec Collett, a journalist working for the UN agency that assists Palestinian refugees. He was abducted in Lebanon on 25 March 1985 and never came home.
