Greek Independence Day
March 25 · Level 10 · #165 of 2238

Greek Independence Day commemorates the beginning of the struggle against Ottoman rule in 1821. It celebrates the movement that led to the modern Greek state, bringing together communities in Greece and Greeks living around the world.
How it is celebrated: military and school parades fill the streets, and blue-and-white flags appear on buildings. A familiar holiday meal is bakaliaros with skordalia: salt cod served with a garlic-rich accompaniment.
The national holiday shares its date with the Annunciation. Greek Orthodox fasting traditions allow fish for that feast during Lent, helping explain why cod has such a prominent place on the table.
