Commonwealth Day
March 9 · Level 7 · #709 of 2238

Commonwealth Day celebrates cooperation among the countries of the Commonwealth, a voluntary association of independent states. It highlights cultural connections and shared ambitions, including education, peace and opportunities for young people.
How it is celebrated: flag-raising ceremonies, school activities and community events mark the occasion. A particularly well-known tradition is the multifaith service at Westminster Abbey, attended by representatives of different countries and religious communities.
Commonwealth membership does not mean having the British monarch as head of state. The association includes republics, and some member countries were never British colonies.
