Pet Insect Day

Pet Insect Day is an informal occasion for appreciating companions with six legs rather than fur. Stick insects, mantises and beetles offer a close-up view of remarkable movement, feeding habits and camouflage, all within the small world of an enclosure.

How it is celebrated: there is no fixed tradition; insect keepers share photographs and care experiences. Observing insects and learning about their different needs also suit the theme.

Females of some stick insect species can produce offspring without males, through a process called parthenogenesis. A keeper's single insect can sometimes become the start of an entire colony.
