Smoke and Mirrors Day
March 29 · Level 3 · #1568 of 2238
Smoke and Mirrors Day is a nod to illusions, sleight of hand and anything that looks very different from what is really going on. The phrase itself has long meant a clever bit of misdirection.
How it is celebrated: magic fans show friends card and coin tricks, teams play observation games, and curious people try to work out how optical illusions fool the eye.
In everyday English, calling something smoke and mirrors means that a flashy surface is distracting you from the real situation, a phrase often heard in politics and business.
