International Mermaid Day
March 29 · Level 2 · #1841 of 2238
International Mermaid Day is an informal celebration of the water-dwelling characters found in folklore, films and fantasy art. It brings together costume enthusiasts, storytellers and people who enjoy swimming in mermaid tails. An ocean is optional; imagination does much of the work.
How it is celebrated: fans share artwork, dress up for themed photos and gather with fellow enthusiasts. Mermaiding groups also hold swimming sessions using monofins and tails.
The fish-tailed mermaid is only one version of a water spirit. In Slavic folklore, the rusalka was often imagined in human form, without a tail.
