Reptile Awareness Day

Reptile Awareness Day is a nudge to give snakes, lizards, turtles and crocodilians as much attention and care as fluffy pets usually get. It helps clear away fears and myths about these animals.

How it is celebrated: reptile fans visit zoos and reptile houses, go to expos, read up on proper pet care and tell friends what makes scaly animals so fascinating. Many also support rescues that look after abandoned reptiles.

New Zealand is home to the tuatara, the only surviving member of an entire order of reptiles that already lived alongside the dinosaurs.
