International Day of the Nacho
October 21 · Level 6 · #1114 of 2238

International Day of the Nacho celebrates crunchy tortilla chips under melted cheese, a snack that has won over the whole world. It is also a chance to remember the man whose nickname gave the dish its name.
How it is celebrated: friends and coworkers pile up a giant platter of nachos with cheese, beans, jalapeños, salsa and guacamole, then argue over whose version is best. Plenty of restaurants run special deals for the day.
Nachos are credited to Ignacio "Nacho" Anaya, a maître d' in Piedras Negras, in northern Mexico, who around 1943 threw the snack together from what was in the kitchen for a group of American women from a nearby fort.
