Poltava Victory Day

This Russian military commemoration recalls Peter I's victory over Swedish forces at Poltava in 1709. The battle became a turning point in the Great Northern War and helped reshape the balance of power in Europe.

How it is celebrated: museums and libraries organise exhibitions, talks and educational activities about the battle. These explore its course, the people involved and its consequences for both sides.

Sweden's King Charles XII escaped to Ottoman territory after the defeat and remained there for several years. The battle was decisive, but the war itself continued until 1721.
