OMON Day in Russia
October 3 · Level 10 · #59 of 2238

OMON Day in Russia recognises personnel in special-purpose police units whose duties include public order and security operations. The observance is linked to the establishment of these units within the Soviet Interior Ministry in 1988.
How it is celebrated: units hold formal assemblies, present service awards and welcome veterans. Memorial ceremonies honour personnel who died while carrying out their duties.
The initials survived a change in the name behind them. Originally referring to a special-purpose militia detachment, OMON later came to stand for a special-purpose mobile detachment in Russian.
