National Muay Thai Day in Thailand

Thailand's National Muay Thai Day honours a martial art that has travelled from Thai training grounds to gyms around the world. It celebrates fighters and teachers, along with the traditions of respect that remain part of the sport.

How it is celebrated: tournaments, demonstrations and introductory sessions bring people together. Before bouts, fighters may perform wai khru ram muay, a ritual of bows and movements accompanied by traditional music to honour their teachers.

The nickname “the art of eight limbs” is quite literal: fighters use both fists, elbows, knees and shins.
