Sámi National Day

Sámi National Day brings together an Indigenous people whose homeland spans northern Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. It honours Sámi languages, culture and rights, marking the anniversary of the first Sámi congress, which opened in Trondheim in 1917.

How it is celebrated: communities raise the Sámi flag and hold concerts, exhibitions and gatherings. Events feature songs and joik, a traditional Sámi vocal art, alongside traditional clothing and crafts.

The circle on the Sámi flag represents two celestial bodies at once: its red half stands for the sun and its blue half for the moon.
