Mischief Night

Mischief Night is the evening before Halloween, when teenagers traditionally get away with small pranks. The idea is to be cheeky, not harmful.

How it is celebrated: in the United States and Canada, kids toilet-paper trees, soap windows, ring doorbells and run. Sensible neighbours tuck away anything breakable and keep an eye on the porch light.

In Detroit the night was known as Devil's Night. In the 1980s the pranks there grew far too destructive, and the city began organising volunteer Angels' Night patrols that kept watch over neighbourhoods until morning.
