Police Day in Kyrgyzstan recognises the officers who maintain public order, investigate crime and respond when people face danger. It also acknowledges the training, responsibility and teamwork behind the familiar sight of a street patrol.
How it is celebrated: official gatherings include awards, congratulations and recognition for veterans of the service. Colleagues and families also remember officers killed on duty, laying flowers at memorials.
The local word militsiya refers to the police service. Despite the resemblance, translating it as the English word 'militia' would give the wrong impression: the two terms describe different kinds of organisation.
