Day of the Dead in Mexico

Mexico's Day of the Dead brings families together to remember loved ones through food, photographs and stories. Grief has a place, but so do affection and laughter: the celebration keeps the departed present in family life.

How it is celebrated: families build ofrendas with candles, photographs, favourite foods and bright marigolds. They decorate graves, visit cemeteries and share pan de muerto, a bread made for the occasion.

The flowers serve a purpose beyond decoration. In traditional belief, paths of marigold petals help guide the souls of the dead back to their families' altars.
