Children's Day in Japan
May 5 · Level 6 · #993 of 2238

Children's Day in Japan celebrates children's happiness and healthy growth. It developed from Tango no Sekku, traditionally associated with boys, and became a national holiday for all children in 1948.
How it is celebrated: families fly carp-shaped streamers called koinobori and display ornamental samurai helmets or warrior dolls. Seasonal treats include kashiwa-mochi wrapped in oak leaves, and some households prepare baths with sweet flag leaves.
Those flying carp carry a wish: the fish's ability to swim against the current symbolizes perseverance and strength as children grow.
