Jamaica Independence Day

Jamaica celebrates the independence it gained from Britain in 1962. The national holiday combines civic ceremonies with a joyful showcase of the island's music, dance and cultural identity.

How it is celebrated: flags go up, communities gather and concerts fill the holiday programme. A major highlight is the Grand Gala, a large performance bringing together music, colorful costumes and dance.

Jamaica's flag has no red, white or blue. Instead, a gold diagonal cross divides the design into green and black triangles.
