International Youth Day
August 12 · Level 10 · #158 of 2238

International Youth Day is a UN observance focused on young people's rights, opportunities and contributions to society. It draws attention to education, employment and meaningful participation in decisions that affect their lives.
How it is celebrated: youth groups organise discussions, workshops, concerts and community activities. Local priorities shape individual events, while an annual UN theme gives the worldwide conversation a shared focus.
The proposal came from the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth in Lisbon in 1998. The UN endorsed it in 1999, and the first International Youth Day followed in 2000.
