International Day of the Tropics

The International Day of the Tropics is a UN observance highlighting the natural and cultural diversity of tropical regions. It also draws attention to the people living there and the challenges of protecting ecosystems, developing cities and sharing resources.

How it is celebrated: universities, research organisations and community groups organise talks, discussions and educational events. Topics include biodiversity, climate change and practical responses to local needs.

The tropics are much more than steamy rainforest. The belt between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn also contains deserts, savannas and high mountains.
