International Translation Day
September 30 · Level 7 · #725 of 2238
International Translation Day celebrates the people who make communication possible across languages. It recognises translators and interpreters whose work opens up books, supports international negotiations and helps essential information reach its audience.
How it is celebrated: professional associations hold conferences, workshops and public conversations. Practitioners exchange solutions to tricky passages and explain the many choices behind a sentence that sounds effortless to its reader.
The date is the feast day of Saint Jerome, known for his work on the Latin Bible. A profession that now uses sophisticated digital tools has a patron who lived long before the printing press.
