International Polar Bear Day
February 27 · Level 2 · #1995 of 2238
This day draws attention to polar bears, which depend on sea ice. As the Arctic warms, there is less ice, and hunting seals becomes harder for the bears.
How it is celebrated: zoos, schools and conservation groups hold talks, games and fundraisers to protect the animals. People learn how to cut their emissions and what they can do at home for the climate.
A polar bear's fur is actually transparent and only looks white because it scatters light, while the skin underneath is black and soaks up warmth from the sun.
