International Day of Zero Waste

This day reminds us that the best waste is the waste never created. It encourages people to treat resources with care and to rethink how things are made, used and thrown away.

How it is celebrated: schools and companies hold clean-ups, swap events and repair workshops. At home, people carry reusable bags and bottles, sort their rubbish and try not to waste food.

The UN General Assembly established the day in late 2022, and it was first observed in 2023. It is led jointly by the UN Environment Programme and UN-Habitat.
