International Day of the World's Indigenous Women and Girls
September 5 · Level 7 · #791 of 2238

This day spotlights the voices, rights and contributions of Indigenous women and girls. They keep languages, crafts and knowledge of the land alive, yet too often go unheard.
How it is celebrated: communities hold gatherings, exhibitions of traditional crafts, concerts and discussions about equality, education and the protection of ancestral lands, with Indigenous women telling their own stories.
The date recalls Bartolina Sisa, an Aymara woman from present-day Bolivia who, together with her husband Túpac Katari, led resistance against Spanish colonial rule and was executed on 5 September 1782.
