International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

This day reminds us that violence against women is not a private matter but a problem for the whole of society. The date honors the Mirabal sisters, killed in the Dominican Republic in 1960, and was designated by the UN General Assembly in 1999.

How it is celebrated: campaigns and forums are held, buildings are lit up in orange for the Orange the World campaign, and the day opens 16 days of activism that end on 10 December, Human Rights Day.

The Mirabal sisters, Patria, Minerva and María Teresa, opposed the dictator Rafael Trujillo, and they were known as Las Mariposas, the Butterflies.
