International Archives Day
June 9 · Level 4 · #1462 of 2238
International Archives Day celebrates documentary memory and the people who preserve it. Archive records can reveal family histories, help explain the past and provide evidence of legal rights: an old document may answer a very present-day question.
How it is celebrated: archives offer exhibitions, tours, talks and sessions with researchers. Online collections and digitised records introduce more people to the pleasures and practicalities of searching.
The date marks the founding of the International Council on Archives, which was established on 9 June 1948.
