India's Independence Day

India's Independence Day marks the end of British colonial rule in 1947. National celebrations honour the struggle for freedom while also recalling the suffering caused by the partition of British India.

How it is celebrated: the prime minister raises the national flag at Delhi's Red Fort and addresses the country. Schools and communities hold ceremonies and cultural performances, while kite flying is a familiar tradition in places including Delhi.

Jawaharlal Nehru delivered his famous Tryst with Destiny speech shortly before midnight on the eve of independence. The transition to freedom was marked as one day gave way to the next.
