Archaeologist Day

This is the professional day of people who reconstruct the lives of the past from potsherds, foundations and jewellery. It is a good moment to thank those who work in the field, the lab and the archive.

How it is celebrated: museums show fresh finds, scholars give talks, and students and expedition teams back from digs swap field stories around a campfire.

The Roman city of Pompeii was buried by ash when Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, and it has been excavated since the 18th century. It still surprises researchers with new finds, from frescoes to ancient street food counters.
