Hot Cross Bun Day
September 11 · Level 1 · #2065 of 2238

Hot cross buns are sweet, spiced buns studded with dried fruit and marked with a cross on top. In Britain they are traditionally baked for Good Friday, and this day gives you a reason to enjoy them in September too.
How it is celebrated: people eat them warm, split and buttered, with a cup of tea or coffee. Some bake a batch at home, others pop into a bakery for a fresh tray.
The nursery rhyme Hot Cross Buns is thought to descend from street vendors' cries, and many British schoolchildren still learn it on the recorder.
