Finnish Language Day

Finnish Language Day falls on 9 April and honours Mikael Agricola, the man who gave Finnish its first written form. It is a chance to remember how a language once spoken far more than written grew into the language of books and schools.

How it is celebrated: schools, libraries and universities hold readings, talks and word games. Flags are raised across Finland that day.

Agricola became Bishop of Turku, and in 1548 his Finnish translation of the New Testament was printed. It is regarded as one of the earliest large texts in the Finnish language.
