International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict

This UN day honours people who have survived sexual violence in wars and crises, and calls for their protection and for the accountability of those responsible.

How it is celebrated: UN bodies and civil society groups hold conferences, public discussions and awareness campaigns, and survivors speak about their experience and the support they need.

The UN General Assembly established the day in 2015. Its date points to 19 June 2008, when the Security Council adopted resolution 1820, which recognised sexual violence as a tactic of war.
